September 26 -- Personal Web Page Assignment and CVN

Note: For those of you having trouble with this assignment (especially with the unix tools ftp and telnet) take a look at the INTERNET QUICK GUIDES on LIBRARYWeb.

Personal Web Page Assignment

For this assignment you need to create a personal homepage in your Cunix account that contains at least the following HTML (hypertext markup language) tags:
  • In-line image. This can be either a picture of yourself or some image that you download from the Internet.
  • Short biography. Briefly describe yourself and your interests.
  • Hotlist. Your hotlist (a list of interesting URLs) must contain at least 10 links that have a common theme.
  • "mail to" link. This link should point to your email (cunix or other) address.
  • Semester schedule. List that classes that you are enrolled for this semester, using a "list" html tag.
  • Any additional HTML that you want to apply is fine. Of course you have many options available to you (tables, special background & text colors, "blink"--don't you dare, etc), but you should take a look at the cgi (common gateway interface) options available to you on Cunix.

A number of html resources exist on the WWW, but you want to begin with the instructions for creating your own cunix home page. You should review some of the existing cunix home pages for inspiration.

    Additional HTML/WWW resources:
  • Beginner's Guide to HTML
  • Kevin Werbach's Bare Bones Guide to HTML
  • HTML Guide on ILTweb
  • Netscape Table Sampler
  • Color Table Guide
  • For an impressive list of HTML Editors, see Gabriel's HTML Editor List.

This assignment is due on October 10, 1995, but you must have something in place by October 3, 1995. It is likely that we will look at a few of your pages on both the 3rd and the 10th so make sure you are working on your home page.
