NII, Competing Visions

Introduction

The National Information Infrastructure is being constructed to provide three main services:

thereby encouraging the use of advanced information technology.

Because our children will be the next generation of leaders the K-12 educational system must tap into the resources that will be provided by the NII. For example, the NII will provide resources, such as digital libraries and other on-line resources, that can be accessed with a modem, thus enhancing educational opportunities for students.

The NII is being strongly supported by our present administration. In 1994 President Clinton signed the Goals 2000: Educate America Act. Clinton also established an Office of Educational Technology which will aid in "providing leadership to the nation in the use of technology to promote achievement of the National Education Goals and increase opportunities for all students to achieve state content and to challenge state student performance standards." Clinton stated that he wanted to connect every classroom, library, clinic, and hospital in America to the National Information Infrastructure by the year 2000. He also established the Office of Educational Research and Improvement to help states, districts, and schools to develop education improvement plans.
