The Institute for Learning Technologies develops, tests, and implements effective pedagogical approaches to the use of new information and communication technologies. Digitally-based teaching and learning methods are designed that enable students to exert control over an educational process maximizing the potential of distributed learning and scholarship. This leads to new ways of engaging and assessing students and transforms the structure and culture of educational institutions. The scope of ILT's new media development efforts includes:

K-12 Testbed Development - Through large-scale, regional testbed work in both NYC and Upstate NY, ILT develops a wide range of K-12 professional and curriculum development activities and network infrastructure for education.

Project Development - This area of work involves the creation of Web-based and education resources that model effective educational design in digital environments. Our premier projects include The New Deal Network (newdeal.feri.org) and The Digital Dante Project (http://www.ilt.columbia.edu/projects/dante/).

Research - ILT's role as intellectual leader in the areas of educational reform via technological innovation and technological innovation with an educational end requires that our action research be informed by a comprehensive understanding of alternatives in practice. All action research begins and ends with a rethinking of traditional models through sustained reflection and study.

Technical Services - ILT manages extensive network resources for internal uses and provides a large number of schools with Internet connectivity and technical support.

Evaluation - Educational projects and products for K-12 education, at the university level, and in the private sector are evaluated using various techniques and strategies.
