CES70
Bilingual Computer Lab Intern
Do you ever feel that no one understands you? Can you imagine going to class everyday and not speaking the same language as the teacher? Well the scenario is true for many children in our New York City school districts. Although there are many highly qualified bilingual teachers at work many times the teachers who instruct the specialty subjects do not speak enough Spanish to effectively communicate with their students. This is one such case, I am the technology facilitator at CES (Community Elementary School) 70 in the Bronx and I teach 1st through 5th grades five of which are bilingual classes. I am looking for a motivated proactive partner to assist in translation of lesson content for these classes. Computers are a necessary part of life today and I need to maximize this time with the children so that they will not become victims of the "digital divide".
Columbia University Language Resource Center
Information Systems Intern
The primary mission of the Language Resource Center (LRC) at Columbia University is to support the Less Commonly Taught languages (LCTL) and to foster the meaningful use of technology in the language classroom, including the development of digital material that support and bolster such practices.

The LRC offers internship opportunities in information systems and technology in education. Interns can work in areas of their interest that support the mission of the LRC or on two projects the LRC is currently developing: metadata tagging and podcasting.
The internship will provide the interested student the opportunity to work in a university environment, be part of dynamic group, and work on solutions that benefit the language community at large.
The internship can be taken for 2 or 3 credits. The hours are flexible and will be agreed upon LRC and the intern.
Communication Fitness

secondary schools or colleges. Working with our founder, Barry Tarshis,
and one of our clients, Jan Mauras at Bronx Community College Writing
Center, the intern would manage a project to determine the impact on
test scores from using Comfit, as a measure of their language arts
proficiency. The intern would develop assessments (using our
framework), administer the study, and lead sessions with one or more
groups of 20-30 students. The project would conclude with the intern
evaluating all data collected and subsequently writing a summary report.

NCREST
Development Intern
The American educational system is a "public" system, yet most of what goes on in schools remains unseen. With few sustained opportunities to discuss their work together, teachers cannot learn from or build on the accomplishments of their peers. In order to address this "knowledge-drain," faculty and staff at NCREST are developing a web-based collection of teaching and learning with diverse students in challenging contexts in New York City and beyond. These multimedia websites bring together videos of classroom practice, interviews with teachers and students, curriculum materials, student work and other resources to provide succinct and engaging ways for teachers to share what they have learned with others. (For more on the project see: http://www.tc.edu/ncrest/website/images.htm ).
In order to help establish this online collection, NCREST is seeking students with experience in web-design and development and in digital media who are interested in participating in an unpaid internship. This internship offers an unusual opportunity to help brainstorm and explore new forms and uses for educational websites and to participate in imagining new forms of teacher education and professional development that take advantage of these new resources. This project involves working with a small number of teachers and teacher educators who want to reflect on their experiences and share them with their colleagues and the wider public. Primary responsibilities will depend on the interests, skills and experience of the applicant, but they revolve around videotaping classroom activities, interviewing teachers and students, collecting curriculum materials and student work, and producing websites that organize these materials for outside audiences. The person in this position will also help to develop online collections and "exhibitions" that bring together materials from a number of these websites. The ideal candidate will have interests in emerging educational technology, experience in web-based multimedia design and development, and some experience in schools.
