new instruction
In contrast to the negative education of Books I-III, when the tutor's role was to remain at the sidelines arranging the circumstances in which Emile's self-education could take place (see e.g. para238, para272, para564, and para603 above), now in Book IV the tutor's role is made very clear to the young man. Having developed to the point where he understands his own needs and obligations, Emile is ready and willing for instruction.
