In his Letter to d'Alembert on the Theater Rousseau argued against creating a theater in Geneva on the grounds that it would corrupt the morals of the simple people and have adverse effects on the political economy of the republic. In that work he admitted however that while the theater was harmful to simple virtuous people it could mitigate the corruption of urban sophisticates.
