I8th and 19th century upper-class ladies of leisure often suffered from a range of ailments (listlessness, anxiety, headaches etc.) generally diagnosed by the medical profession at the time as "vapors." It is now believed that such ailments were due to the frustrating situation of not being able to engage in meaningful work.
