InBook V of the Republic, Plato gets rid of the family in his imaginary republic, and stipulates that women and men should receive the same education. Such ideas are anathema to Rousseau, who sees sexual distinctions and integrity of the family as the only source of virtue in the otherwise corrupt political context of the ancien regime.
