Rousseau takes a detour from the Sophie of the Emile to tell us a story about another Sophie who falls in love with Telemachus. And yet the identification of Telemachus will appear later when Emile meets his Sophie. Rousseau used similarly overlapping narrative devices in his account of the running race in Book II, para486 ff above.
