Scholars have long debated about whether Emile should be considered a "treatise" or a "novel." Here Rousseau criticizes other works on education for omitting "the crisis which forms the bridge between the child and the man" and says he is willing to accept the charge that by including love in his treatise he has written a "romance." (The French word for novel is roman.)
