The corrupting influence of money is a consistent theme in Rousseau's writings. In his Considerations on the Government of Poland Rousseau suggests that contributions to the state be made in the form of public service rather than taxes; and in Book III, Chap. 15 in On Social Contract he states that "In a truly free state, the citizens do everything with their own hands, and nothing with money."
