You ... a citizen?
In Book I para22 Rousseau had insisted that in any pedagogical endeavor one must "choose between making a man and making a citizen," and throughout the Emile the stress has been on making "a man." At this point however Rousseau needs to answer the question posed in para35 above: What will a man raised uniquely for himself become for others?
Although the following section "On Travel" shows Emile's tutor providing him with an admirable course in civic education, the question remains whether the man Emile would make a good citizen, especially given the stringent requirements for citizenship laid out in On Social Contract.
