Rousseau understands both weakness and strength as relative powers that relate to one's capacity for ethical actions. (see para164 below) Out of weakness comes a sense of dependency; and out of dependency come amour-propre, envy, and hostility. Strength, on the other hand, gives one a sense of independence and self-sufficiency. It is self-sufficiency that allows us to be free of envy and therefore good.
