The Abbé de Saint-Pierre

The Abbé's Project for Perpetual Peace was drafted in the early part of the 18th century, but its length and ponderous prose made it quite inaccessible to the general reader. Several years after the Abbé's death in 1743, friends of Rousseau suggested that he try to edit the Abbé's writings So when Rousseau went to Montmorency in 1756 he took with him several boxes containing the Abbé's manuscripts. For Rousseau's comments on Saint-Pierre and this project, see Book IX of the Confessions.
