Rousseau is implicitely referring to amour de soi, the basic form of self-love that enables living creatures to survive. In the First Part of his Discourse on the Origin of Inequality Rousseau affirms the presence of amour de soi in the early stages of human history; here in Emile he affirms its presence in the early life of an individual child.
