The eighteenth century was and is known to be the century of the Enlightenment, a period of lively skepticism, bold social criticism, and unprecedented faith in reason. As early as his Discourse on the Sciences and Arts (1750) Rousseau took issue with much of the critical thrust of his age's philosophical reasoning.
