Present interest
Assumed here is the belief that the child's own interests must be aroused before any constructive learning can take place. In the 20th century John Dewey will elaborate on this idea in his 1913 book, Interest and Effort in Education. See also Dewey's Democracy and Education, Chapter Ten.
