Newton
English scientist (1642-1747) who discovered the law of gravity and other mathematical formulas fundamental to modern physics and astronomy. Newton and Locke are considered to be important 17th century precursors of the 18th century Enlightenement and were hightly revered by Rousseau's contemporaries.
