Although the emphasis in Book III will be on introducing Emile to scientific knowledge, Rousseau begins by stressing the need to limit that knowledge. Unlike other Enlightenment thinkers, Rousseau consistently warned his readers of the harmful efffects of scientific progress. See in particular his Discourse on the Sciences and Arts (1750).
