Hermes
Hermes was identified with the Egyption god Thoth and was the inventer of writing according to the Greeks. Rousseau mentions Thoth in a similar critique of the sciences in the Second Part of his Discourse on the Sciences and Arts.
How can we understand the statement "I hate books" by one who read books so avidly, especially during the period in his early 20's when he was living with Mme. de Warens? (See Book VI of his Confessions.)
