As these comments make clear, there is nothing soft or permissive about natural education. Nature, or necessity, can be a tough teacher; the child's freedom is meant to harden him not to indulge him.
To idolize children is as unnatural as to constrain them. It prematurely awakens amour propre and teaches them to be manipulative, tyrannical and ultimately unhappy.
