The first two are based on Plutarch's lives of Timoleon and Aemilius Paulus. Plutarch shows Aemilius to be the more perfect of the pair since he was unfazed by bad fortune. Rousseau may have had Aemilius in mind in naming Emile. The Tarquin was Vonones whose story is told by Tacitus in his Annals.
