Ulysses
Emile's mentor is compared with Odysseus (Ulysses) in Book X of Homer's Odyssey. Just before setting sail from the island of Aeolia Odysseus was given an oxhide bag in which the King had bottled up all the winds. While Odysseus himself stayed at the helm the winds were fair, but just before reaching land he fell into a deep sleep. When his greedy crew decided to open the oxhide bags, out roared huge tempests that threw the boat off course.
