intention
Note the importance of perceived intention in Rousseau's psychological principles. Rousseau's own perceptions of harmful intentions on the part of others (including his friends) occasionally verged on paranoia; see e.g. his Confessions, Bk IX. On the other hand the historical record makes it clear that a number of Rousseau's so-called friends (e.g. Voltaire) expressed extreme hostility towards him behind his back.
