For Rousseau moral standards derive not from abstract concepts of metaphysics but from "the natural needs of the human heart." While reason has a role in the development of conscience (as will be seen in the "Profession of Faith of the Savoyard Vicar" below), pure reason alone cannot be the source of moral norms.
