Compassion is innate but must be nurtured so as to resist the cynicism of reason. Part of Emile's education in compassion will consist of engaging in voluntary service to his community; one strengthens one's benevolence toward others by exercising it. In recognition of the truth of Rousseau's principles here, some high schools and colleges today make community service a part of their curriculum.
