Hannibal
Carthaginian general (247-183 BCE) who with thousands of troops (and elephants) crossed the Alpes into Italy and lay seige to cities under Roman rule. In the 18th century a traditional exercise in Rhetoric was to analyse the speech Hannibal gave to his troops on this historic occasion.
