Author's Note 22
We must recognise that pain is often a
necessity, pleasure is sometimes a need. So there is only one of the
child's desires which should never be complied with, the desire to
make himself obeyed. From which it follows that in whatever they ask
for it is the motive behind their asking that must be paid attention
to. As far as possible give them everything they ask for provided it
can really give them a real pleasure; always refuse what they ask
for out of fantasy or simply to wield authority.
