Among a thousand known facts here is one that has no need of commentary. In the sixteenth century when the Catholic theologians condemned without distinction all the Jews' books to be burned, the illustrious and knowledgeable Reuchlin, having been consulted on this matter, provoked terrible punishment that nearly killed him solely because he was of the mind that one could keep those books which contained nothing against Christianity and that dealt with atters completely unrelated to religion.
