A Note on the Text

The text which follows is that of the first edition, posthumously published in 1706. I have modernized the spelling and punctuation and corrected a number of obvious printer's errors; apart from this I have altered the text only when it seemed clearly necessary in order to make sense; these occasions have been very few and are indicated either by brackets (for additions) or in footnotes. There remain, understandably, a number of roughness both in grammar and style; these Locke would no doubt have polished out had he been able.
